Redd also suggested that teachers may be able to help students style more effectively. Ampadu (in press) studied the effects of “Modeling Orality” on the writing development of college students of multicultural backgrounds (including European American). In her study, students imitated the rhetorical strategies of African American oral texts as a means of improving their writing. Specifically, the students imitated the repetititon schemes of anaphora, antithesis, chiasmus, and parallelism. Ampadu drew on both the Greek classical rhetorical tradition and African American rhetorical tradition.

Out of their creativity and their need, Black people create ways to both express and value themselves. African American Vernacular expression is created in part by resistance to oppression. This resistance is “an assertion of humanity … [C]ollectively [these acts express] a need for self-identification, for a reality apart from the one being foisted upon [African Americans] by” the dominant culture (Wideman, 1976: 34–7). I intend to argue that Black Vernacular discourses and rhetorics have helped to sustain and transform Black people themselves as well as enrich and change America and its discourses and deserve broader analysis and application in American rhetorical and literacy education.
