You’ll find a discussion of after-hours task scheduling in Chapter 8. Relying on Third-Party Utilities The tools that Microsoft provides for working at the command line are basic, simple, and not always the best tools at your disposal. However, Microsoft is actually spending a lot of time trying to upgrade their offerings with new features such as the OCList utility provided with Server Core. Third-party tools for working at the command prompt have been around for a long time. Most of these products are mature, fully tested, and quite capable of making your command line experience everything it should be.

You won’t find the familiar Add or Remove Programs applet in Server Core, but you still have a number of methods of working with applications at your disposal using the command line in this case. The “Performing Application Installations” section of Chapter 3 provides everything you need to install applications in Server Core. In fact, the entire chapter is useful reading when you know a GUI method exists for performing a common configuration task, but you don’t see it anywhere in Server Core. The Control Panel admittedly contains a number of applets you’ll never need in Server Core, so it’s impossible to miss them.

In fact, when you started the computer, you saw a command prompt and you never really left it the entire time you worked with the computer. I’m dating myself, of course, because no one’s worked exclusively at the command line for many years. Microsoft is changing that, of course, with Windows Server 2008 Server Core. When working with this operating system, you’re effectively limited to working at the command line. You can perform certain tasks from a client machine using a standard console, but in many cases, these graphical tools won’t work and you’ll need to perform any configuration tasks right at the command line.
